Release WMO State of the Global Climate 2022

Global news

The WMO released its 'State of the Global Climate 2022' report on April 21st.

The WMO State of the Global Climate report 2022 focuses on key climate indicators – greenhouse gases, temperatures, sea level rise, ocean heat and acidification, sea ice and glaciers. It also highlights the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.

Some observations:

  • Sea level is accelerating, and ocean heat is increasing - and this trend will continue for many centuries.
  • Antarctic sea ice falls to the lowest extend on record.
  • The long-running cooling La Niña event only put a temporary brake on rising global temperatures in 2022. The past eight years have been the warmest on record. If El Niño develops, this will turn up the heat.
  • Global mean temperatures for the past eight years have been the highest on record despite a cooling La Niña for 3 straight years.
  • Europe shattered records for glacier melt in 2022. Switzerland lost 6 percent of glacier ice volume in just one year.
