The WMO released its 'State of the Global Climate 2022' report on April 21st.
The WMO State of the Global Climate report 2022 focuses on key climate indicators – greenhouse gases, temperatures, sea level rise, ocean heat and acidification, sea ice and glaciers. It also highlights the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.
Some observations:
- Sea level is accelerating, and ocean heat is increasing - and this trend will continue for many centuries.
- Antarctic sea ice falls to the lowest extend on record.
- The long-running cooling La Niña event only put a temporary brake on rising global temperatures in 2022. The past eight years have been the warmest on record. If El Niño develops, this will turn up the heat.
- Global mean temperatures for the past eight years have been the highest on record despite a cooling La Niña for 3 straight years.
- Europe shattered records for glacier melt in 2022. Switzerland lost 6 percent of glacier ice volume in just one year.
